He had a long and successful history as an entrepreneur which led him to serve as the Vice President of the Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin). He also has been a member of the People's Consultative Assembly since 1992 And is now appointed as the Deputy Chairman.
In 1994, he was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Fellowship Award by the Republic of Singapore for his contribution to the development as well as the relationship and goodwill between both countries.
He was appointed as the first Governor of the newest Indonesian province, Gorontalo, after winning the first Governor election from 2001-2009. From October 22, 2009-2011 he was appointed as Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. His contribution to the country was recognized by the government with some Presidential Awards and the highest recognition is BINTANG MAHAPUTRA ADIPRADANA.
